Eligibility

The following are the CAMP eligibility requirements. You qualify if:

  • A person, spouse, his or her parent or guardian must have spent a minimum of 75 days during the past 24 months as a migrant or seasonal farmworker; OR
  • The person must have participated or eligible to participate in the Employment and Training Administration, Department of Labor Workforce Investment Act (WIA), Migrant and Seasonal Farmworker Programs; AND
  • Be enrolled or be admitted for enrollment as a full-time student at the University of New Mexico; not beyond the first academic year of a program of study at UNM; and have the need for financial assistance and supporting services in order to complete an academic program of study at the University of New Mexico.

UNM-CAMP students will participate in a comprehensive curriculum designed to meet their academic, financial, and support needed to complete their first year of college. CAMP participants will be enrolled in university courses and receive (1) specialized tutoring, study skill instruction and academic instruction workshops, mentoring, and (2) advising in academics, financial aid and workshops on creating and maintaining a budget, personal, and career awareness.

In addition to the academic component, exposure to cultural events, educational self-development programs, career fairs, and health services usually not available to migrant youth, will be provided by the university. Additional support services will be offered to ensure the participants' success in the program.

The program will provide the CAMP student with assistance in (1) making the transition from secondary school to post-secondary school; (2) generating the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to succeed in post-secondary school; and (3) developing the academic skills, personal self-confidence, and financial resources necessary to continue in a UNM undergraduate program.

As a follow-up of service to CAMP, students after their first year of participation in the program will continue receiving on-going academic support services from the Division of Student Affairs. These support services will facilitate CAMP students' retention in higher education through graduation and beyond.
