Job Title:

Summer Educational Mentor/Tutor (EMT)
Work-study preferred

Position Description:
As an Educational Mentor/Tutor (EMT) you will play an important role in the daily lives of students. You will be assigned a small group of approximately 10-15 students throughout the summer. Within 3 various day shifts, you will be responsible for facilitating small group and classroom activities as well as other duties as assigned. You must be willing to undergo a background check through the University of New Mexico.

The program begins on May 19, 2008 and concludes on August 8, 2008. You will be required to attend a mandatory five day training session May 19-May 23, 2008 from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Duties:

  • Act as both a mentor and tutor
  • Be able to think on your feet to keep the students active during down times
  • Be a resource person for the students
  • Implement workshops/seminars and team building activities
  • Maintain a positive professional relationship with the students through open communication and active listening
  • Maintain a professional attitude and relationship with students, co-workers, University staff and community partners
  • Follow and enforce University student/participant policies as outlined by the Department of College Enrichment and Outreach Programs and the Student Pathfinder
  • Adhere to all personnel policies as presented by the University of New Mexico and the Department of College Enrichment and Outreach
  • Ensure the safety and well being of the students
  • Monitor and supervise all student activities

Qualifications:

  • Strong verbal/written communication skills
  • Have a positive attitude and the ability to take initiative to complete unforeseen program and participant needs
  • Able to work productively under pressure with efficiency
  • Academic proficiency in English 102 or higher and/or Math 121, 145, 129 or higher (please submit a copy of unofficial transcripts)
  • Able to work with a diverse group of individuals
  • Have the desire to work with youth based programs
  • Must be of junior standing with at least 60 credit hours by the end of the Spring 2008 semester
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Be available for 30-40 hours of work per week  with a flexible schedule to include evenings and weekends
  • Be FA/CPR certified (training will be provided)

Please return your completed application to the College Prep office by Friday, April 25, 2008 along with a copy of your unofficial transcripts, two completed recommendation forms and resume. If taking summer courses, you must submit a class schedule by Friday, May 9, 2008.

Summer Nighttime Educational Mentor/Tutor (EMT)

Position Description
As a Residential Educational Mentor/Tutor (EMT) you will play an important role in the lives and safety of students. You will be responsible for co-facilitating evening mentor groups, required to patrol the inside and outside dorm area, as well as perform assigned office tasks. In the mornings, you will eat with the students (breakfast will be provided). You will work three 10-hour shifts or four 10-hour shifts each week from 9:00 p.m.-8:00 a.m., including a one hour lunch break. You must be willing to undergo a background check through the University of New Mexico.

The program begins on May 19, 2008 and concludes on August 8, 2008. You will be required to attend a mandatory five day training session May 19-May 23, 2008 from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Duties:

  • Ensure safety of students by securing dorm area
  • Ensure students get to bed by assigned hour
  • Address unforeseen program and participant emergencies
  • Perform office duties during shift as required
  • Maintain a positive professional relationship with the students through open communication and active listening
  • Maintain a professional attitude and relationship with students, co-workers, University staff and community partners
  • Follow and enforce University student/participant policies as outlined by the Department of College Enrichment and Outreach Programs and the Student Pathfinder
  • Adhere to all personnel policies as presented by the University of New Mexico and the Department of College Enrichment and Outreach
