The University of New Mexico High School Equivalency Program (HEP) is a unique opporunity for individuals with migrant or seasonal farm worker backgrounds. This program offers participants the opportunity to earn a GED certificate through intensive GED prepatory instruction and supportive services.

HEP, in collaboration with established GED programs throughout New Mexico, provides convenient GED instruction that is flexible with the everyday schedules of our participants. Upon successful completion of the program, HEP provides assistance for placement into a post-secondary institution, career position, or military service. HEP is funded by the US Department of Migrant Education under the Department of Education.

The UNM High School Equivalency Program is federally funded through a five-year discretionary grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Migrant Education in the amount of $238,337 per each fiscal year until June 30,2007.

 

Services:

  • Classroom Instruction and Individualized Tutoring
  • Career and Academic Advisement
  • Opportunities to Obtain a College Degree or Job Training
  • Opportunities for Job Placement
  • Exposure to Potential Employers
  • Supportive Services (may include: transportation, childcare, gasoline reimbursement, and/or a stipend)

Eligibility:

To be eligible for HEP you must be:

  • Individuals that are not enrolled in school and lack a high school diploma or GED; and
  • Are at least 16 years of age or older; and
  • Parent(s) or themselves have worked at least 75 days within the last two years in agriculture.

Agricultural Activities may include:

  • Activities related to the production or processing of crops, dairy products, poultry, or livestock.
  • Activities related to the cultivation or harvesting of trees.
  • Activities related to fish farms.
