The Ronald E. McNair Program at the University of New Mexico is made possible through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant supports undergraduate students' scholarly activities throughout the academic year and summer. Through this program, UNM plays a very important role by encouraging students to pursue graduate studies and become faculty members.
Exposure to graduate work and mentorship programs is important to enable students to realize their full potential. Low income, first generation college students or students under-represented in graduate education are invited to submit an application to this program. The McNair Program prepares undergraduate juniors and seniors aspiring to study at the graduate level.
The University of New Mexico McNair Program offers students the opportunity to nurture their academic goals. To ensure success in the classroom and with them, students attend skill-building seminars that enhance their abilities to achieve while helping them evaluate their own academic and personal profiles.
Students participating in the program are required to spend classroom time on a research project, meet regularly wih the program advisor, attend workshops, lectures and meetings, and visit other university campuses. In addition, students must complete a summer research project, present a written abstract and an oral presentation, and submit a final research paper relecting the time spent on the project (10-15 pages) true commitment to study at the graduate level.
The UNM Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program is 100% funded in the amount of $220,427 through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education under the Higher Education Act of 1965 Title IV, Part A, Subpart 2. The Research Opportunity Program is funded by the State of New Mexico.
